The Importance of Cross-Cultural Understanding in Football Teams
The global popularity of football has given rise to a variety of discussions about the role that cultural diversity and reliance on particular styles of play have in sporting outcomes. However, scarce scholarly consideration has been given to the interplay between these factors and how they affect teams’ ability to achieve favorable sporting results.
Specifically, it has been found that teams with higher levels of cultural diversity tend to have better performance in possession-based and constructive attacking styles but are less effective at defensively-oriented playing approaches. Furthermore, wealthier teams exhibit a stronger tendency to be successful in more offensive playing styles, whereas less affluent teams are more likely to improve their performance in defensively oriented tactics.
This article aims to add to the body of literature by providing new empirical insights into this issue by analyzing data from a sample of 23,186 professional football matches from 45 leagues worldwide. We employ bivariate correlations and ordinary least squares (OLS) regression models to investigate the interaction between a team’s cultural composition, its dominant playing style, and its market/economic value, moderated by its level of cultural diversity.
